Why should I change my Thermostat?

Posted by Nicholas Searle ot 06:53 PM

Some people have older “turn-the-dial” thermostats which may be 10 or more years old. Why should you bother changing these?

Older thermostats may use a mercury switch and often have a gold ring that you turn or dial to your desired temperature. Although its rare to find mercury in your old thermostat, it is a possibility. An older thermostat that gets damage can potentially release mercury into the air, which is dangerous to human health.

Digital thermostats incorporate electronic programmable switching, which completely nullifies any chance of mercury being released into your home. Most newer homes come with digital thermostats, and there are lots of advantages to the newer technology.

Digital thermostats do not use moving parts to measure temperature and instead use thermistors or semiconductor devices such as resistance thermometers. As a result, digital thermostats keep measurements stable and accurate throughout the products lifetime (provided you change the battery!).

Another important reason is that digital thermostats are programmable. This means that you can program them to switch on whenever you choose. This can save you money on your heating and air conditioning because you can program the thermostat to switch off during the day when you are out of the house and then automatically turn on when you come home so the house is ready for your arrival. You can even have them switch on and off while you sleep, enhancing overnight temperatures.

In Ontario, there are still government programs to “Switch the 'Stat”. That is you can get a rebate for recycling your old thermostat and getting a new digital one.  For info about a local stewardship program focused on recovering and recycling thermostats contact Summerhill Impact:
