How do you calculate if you live in a “green city”?

New research on green cities has come out of the Massachusetts Institute for Technolocy (MIT), one of the world’s leading Universities. They used millions of images from Google Street View and for each one, a computer analyzed the ratio of green-to-grey in each picture.

Doing it this way allowed them to create a “GREEN VIEW INDEX” based on the amount of leafiness on each street in major cities around the world.

1. Singapore

2. Sydney, Australia

2. Vancouver, Canada

3. Cambridge, USA

4. Durban, South Africa

5. Sacramento, USA

5. Johannesburg, South Africa

6. Frankfurt, Germany

7. Geneva, Switzerland

8. Amsterdam, Netherlands

9. Seattle, USA

10. Toronto, Canada

Cities around the world realize the importance of tree cover on their streets. Increasing the number of tree’s on city streets can lower urban temperatures by creating more shade, and scientifically they have been shown to block the shortwave radiation from the sun.

Trees reduce air pollution by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. Tree root systems also help hold the soil together and this is important during times of flooding such as during severe rain or storm surges.

One limitation of the research is that it did not include cities like Beijing or Delhi, in countries like China or India respectively. The reason is that these cities do not yet have Google Street View images or extensive ones that cover the whole city. More future research is needed.
