Going on Vacation? Prevent Flooding before you go!

Posted by Nicholas Searle ot 03:52 PM

It is important to prevent water leaks and flooding while you are away on vacation. In almost all condo units and homes there are main water shut off valves which you can turn off before you go away. Its not only important for prevention, but can save you thousands of dollars in damages due to flooding, if you have to turn off the water in an emergency.

In newer condos and homes the shut-off is easy to find and operate. However in older properties, the master shut-off valve may be hard to find and it might need a special Key to turn it off. Check with your Property Manager about how this works.

Many water leaks and flooding problems come from the washing machine. The water pipes can be under extreme pressure and burst (Hopefully not while you are away on vacation!). Some condos have special shut-off valves specifically for the washing machine and it is a good idea to ensure that the water to the washing machine is turned off after each use.

Some condos have by-laws that require owners/tenants to turn off the water to their unit if they are going to be away on vacation. If there is a problem and this has not been done, there may be issues with your building insurance refusing to cover the damages.
